Our own Sarah Barnes will give a talk tracing Dalston's musical cultures, which in the last 50 years have included reggae, house music, free jazz and experimental music.
The talk will draw on a chapter of the PhD she is currently finishing with the Drama department at Queen Mary University of London ('Finding a Place to Play: Site and Sociability in London's Alternative Classical Music Scene 2004-2017').
Sarah’s work explores the effect of sites and their histories on musical performance and listening. Her research has focused on East London in particular, and has led her to consider the relationship of artistic activity to urban development and policy in the city.
With refreshments.
